8. Public Records (Local)

A public record refers to "information that has been recorded and/or filed by a public agency". These records include: census data, criminal records, court records, property information, and bankruptcy rulings. Many of these examples are available to the public for free at federal, state, county, and city level. While I have never considered looking into my local public records, I learned that people generally view the public records to monitor the government and to simply learn about the place they are living in.

Growing up in a small town in Texas, I never had to leave my house (much less my town) to know everything about my neighbors or people I see around town. Gossip and news travels faster than a wildfire in a small town, which makes the idea of purchasing or searching for public records seems comical. But even in my small town, there is still countless documents about the town and county for available for public access at the Bell County Clerk's office.

Available at the Bell County Clerk's website, are links to specific records accessible online. These records include: civil, criminal, or probate records, birth certificates, civil filing fees, death certificates, marriage licenses, military discharge, property fraud alert, etc. But with the convenience of online searches, the records are not free to view. And the process often requires additional paperwork and proof of identification for certain records, such as birth certificates.

But even with applications and a cost, the public records are available to anyone willing to put in the time to obtain them. And I feel safer knowing there is a process for obtaining records in my hometown, rather than searching as if you were on a normal search engine to learn specific information about yourself or someone else.

Although the intentions behind public records are essential and helpful for communities and governments, I still wonder about the total amount of privacy granted through the accessibility of these private documents. But I definitely see the value in obtaining certain certificates and documents to learn more about your local and state government and the efficiency and overall safety of the location which surrounds your home.
